Information about IBANs
An IBAN entered is checked for both its structure and validity.
An IBAN is structured as follows:
- Characters 1 and 2 are letters (country code)
- Characters 3 and 4 are digits
- Minimum of 15 characters, maximum of 34 characters
- A German IBAN consists of 22 characters
- A European IBAN can have up to 34 characters
- Example of a German IBAN: DE07 1234 1234 1234 1234 12
If the IBAN entered matches the format, its validity is then checked. This can result in an error message.
Possible reasons are:
- Typing errors or transposed digits
- Your BIC has not yet been added to the database of valid BICs; this takes some time for newly established banks.
- There is also a delay in adding the IBAN of a newly opened account to the database of valid IBANs.
If you receive an error message but your IBAN is valid and you have entered it correctly, please contact the Customs Service Desk.
